Can Cats Really Enjoy Walks on a Harness?

More cats are discovering the outside world safely with the help of a harness and lead, but harness walking will not suit every cat.

The key is allowing your cat to set the pace.

Start by letting them investigate the harness indoors. Once they are comfortable with it, try putting it on for a few minutes at a time before introducing the lead. Some cats will take to it quickly, while others may need several weeks of short sessions.

When you eventually venture outside, choose somewhere quiet and secure. A garden is ideal for a first adventure, particularly if your cat has never explored outdoors before.

A properly fitted cat harness is particularly important because cats are surprisingly good escape artists. It should be snug without restricting movement, and always check the fit before heading outside.

Harness walks are not about making cats walk like dogs. Some will stroll happily beside you, while others would much rather investigate one interesting bush for ten minutes.

Both count as an adventure.
