We tend to think about dog paws during very hot or icy weather, but autumn can be surprisingly tough on them too.
September brings wetter grass, muddy paths, rough ground and the beginning of colder temperatures. Regularly checking your dog’s paws now can help you spot small problems before they become uncomfortable.
After walks, remove mud and debris from between the pads and look for redness, small cuts or cracked areas. Dogs with longer fur around their feet may also collect grass seeds and tiny bits of vegetation between their toes.
If the pads are becoming dry, a dog-safe paw balm can help moisturise and protect them. A little goes a long way, so there is no need to completely coat the paw.
It is also worth remembering that paw licking can sometimes be your first clue that something is irritating them.
A quick paw check after a muddy autumn walk only takes a minute, and your carpets may appreciate the attention too.
