Keeping Indoor Cats Entertained as the Days Get Shorter

As autumn arrives and the evenings become darker, many cats naturally spend more time indoors.

That makes September a good time to refresh their indoor environment.

Cats do not necessarily need expensive toys to stay entertained. Cardboard boxes, paper bags without handles, tunnels and places to climb can all provide opportunities to explore and play.

Rotate toys rather than leaving everything out permanently. A toy that disappears into a cupboard for two weeks can suddenly become fascinating again when it returns.

Window watching is another great source of entertainment. A comfortable bed or perch beside a secure window gives cats their own version of television, particularly if there are birds, trees or people passing outside.

For cats that enjoy harness adventures, shorter autumn outings can also provide plenty of stimulation without allowing them to roam freely.

The aim is simply to give them opportunities to climb, investigate, chase, scratch and, naturally, sleep somewhere you had absolutely no intention of them sleeping.
