How to Keep Your Pets Warm During Winter

Brrr, It’s Chilly!

As the temperatures plummet, it’s not just us humans layering up and wanting to crank up the heating, it’s also a time to think about keeping our furry friends safe and warm. Winter (especially in the UK) can be unpredictable, with frosty mornings, biting winds, and the odd snowflake! While some pets might revel in the colder weather, others need a bit of extra care to stay cosy and healthy. Let’s explore some practical ways to ensure our dogs and cats can stay snug all winter long.

Keep the Cold at Bay with Cosy Bedding

When it’s chilly, a warm and inviting place to snooze becomes a must for pets. Here are a few bedding options that we have used to help your furry companions combat the cold:

Canvas Crates with Vet Bed

Canvas crates available in small, medium & large are a brilliant choice for winter as they provide a den-like space that retains warmth. Line the crate with a layer of vet bed, and you’ve got the perfect toasty retreat for your pet.

Vet bed is a game changer! This soft, fluffy material is designed to wick moisture away while keeping your pet insulated. It’s great for cats and dogs alike, whether it’s inside a crate or laid out in their favourite nap spot.

Doughnut-Shaped Beds

There are a large amount of pet beds around but we have found that our dogs & cats love a Doughnut bed they are an excellent option especially for pets who love curling up. The high sides of these beds create a cosy cocoon, trapping heat and keeping drafts out. Plus, as well as being irresistibly comfy, they are easy to wash.

No Crate, No Problem

Even if your pet isn’t a fan of crates, you can still use a vet bed on its own. Pop it in their favourite spot, near a radiator (but not too close), and voilà, a warm and snuggly haven.

Dress to Impress (and Stay Warm!)

While some pets come with their own winter coat, others benefit from a little extra help.

  • Dog Coats and Jumpers: Short-haired or small breeds like Greyhounds and Chihuahuas are particularly prone to feeling the cold. A well-fitted dog coat or jumper can make outdoor walks more enjoyable and protect against the chill.
  • Cat Jumper: Short-haired & no haired breeds enjoy staying warm with a jumper.

Watch Out for Frosty Hazards

Cold weather brings its own set of risks. Here are some key things to keep in mind:

    Paw Care

Frost, snow, and road salt can be tough on sensitive paws (& noses). Give your dog’s paws a quick rinse with warm water after walks to remove salt and grit. For added protection, consider using a Nose & paw balm (like the ones we make at Pipkin and Bella 😉) to create a protective barrier.

    Anti-freeze Alert

Be mindful of antifreeze spills. This chemical can be highly toxic to pets but has a sweet taste that can attract them. Always clean up spills immediately and keep bottles stored securely. Contact your vet practice immediately if your pet has consumed anti-freeze.

Layer Up Your Home for Comfort

Just as we layer up with blankets and jumpers indoors, creating a cosy home environment for your pets can make all the difference.

    • Radiator Beds for Cats: If you have a feline friend, radiator beds are a popular option. They’re elevated and directly next to the heat source, creating a warm and snug perch.
    • Keep Sleeping Areas Off the Floor: Cold air tends to settle near the ground. Elevate your pet’s bed slightly to keep them off chilly floors, especially if you have tiled or wooden floors.

    Keep Them Active

When it’s bitterly cold, it’s tempting to cut walks short or skip them altogether, but exercise is vital for keeping pets healthy and happy. If it’s too cold for a long outdoor walk, consider these alternatives:

      • Indoor Playtime: Engage your pets in cat games or dog puzzle toys to burn off energy indoors.
      • Shorter Walks with Layers: For dogs, opt for shorter, more frequent walks with a warm coat to minimise exposure to the cold.

      Diet and Hydration

Cold weather increases calorie demands for many pets, especially those spending more time outdoors. Make sure their diet supports their energy needs but avoid overfeeding.

      • Fresh Water: Hydration is just as important in winter as it is in summer. Check that water bowls haven’t frozen over, especially for outdoor pets.
      • Warm Treats: A gentle warm meal (e.g., warm water added to kibble) can be a comforting treat on a frosty day.

      Extra TLC for Senior Pets

Older pets often feel the cold more intensely due to conditions like arthritis. The cold can worsen joint stiffness, so consider the following for your senior pet:

      • Orthopaedic Beds: These provide extra support for aching joints while keeping them off cold floors.
      • Gentle Warmth: Use a pet-safe heating pad under their bedding or wrap a hot water bottle in a thick towel to create a gentle heat source.
      • Regular Grooming: Keep their coat in tip-top shape as a healthy coat provides better insulation.

Signs Your Pet is Feeling the Cold

It’s important to know the signs that your pet might be too cold:

        • Shivering or Trembling
        • Reluctance to Move
        • Tucking Tail or Curling Up Tightly
        • Cold Ears, Tail, or Paws

If your pet shows these signs, it’s time to warm them up.

        Emergency Preparations

Winter can throw unexpected surprises our way. Be prepared with these essentials:

          • Pet-Friendly Salt: If you need to de-ice areas your pet frequents, use a pet-safe alternative to standard road salt.
          • Power Cut Plans: In the event of a power cut, have extra blankets and a hot water bottle ready to keep pets warm.
          • First Aid Kit: A winter-ready first aid kit for your pet should include paw balm, bandages, and any necessary medication.

          Final Thoughts

While the cold can be challenging, it’s also a chance to bond with your pets as you snuggle up together. Whether it’s providing a warm bed, protecting their paws, or sharing an extra cuddle, these small gestures make a big difference in keeping your furry companions happy and healthy.

Stay warm, stay safe, and don’t forget to stock up on those winter essentials for your pets, because every wag and purr deserves a cosy winter!
