I only did a blog back in November about keeping pets safe in the colder weather, but given that our temperatures are dropping again, I thought it was worthwhile revisiting the topic and I’ve added a few suggested links as well.
When the UK transforms into a winter wonderland, it’s a magical time for us, but it can be tough on our pets. With temperatures dropping as low as -10°C, snow, and icy conditions, it’s vital to take extra precautions to ensure your furry friends stay safe and comfortable. Here are some tips for keeping your pets protected during harsh winter weather.
- Bundle Them Up 🐾
Short-haired dogs and smaller breeds can struggle to keep warm in freezing temperatures. Investing in a cosy, well-fitted coat or jumper can make all the difference. Purchase one that does not restrict movement.
For cats venturing outside, limit their time outdoors and add a jumper if they are being supervised in the garden, then make sure they have a warm, dry place to return to.
- Protect Their Paws ❄️
Ice, grit, and salt can be harsh on your pet’s paws. Before heading out, apply a protective paw balm to shield their pads from cracking or irritation. Don’t forget to wipe their paws with a damp cloth after walks to remove any salt or grit that could cause discomfort or harm if licked off. Our Pipkin and Bella paw balm is perfect for this job, offering natural protection and soothing relief.
- Keep Them Moving 🐕
Exercise is important, even in the cold, but try to adjust your routine to shorter, more frequent walks if the weather is particularly harsh. Avoid frozen ponds or lakes, as they can pose serious risks to them & you. If it’s too cold to go outside, consider indoor games or enrichment activities to keep your dog or cat active and entertained.
- Provide Extra Warmth Indoors 🏠
Make sure your home has plenty of cosy spots for your pets to curl up in. Blankets, soft bedding, and even a warm water bottle wrapped in a towel can help them stay toasty. Avoid placing their bed near draughty windows or doors, and if you have tiled or wooden floors, consider adding a rug for insulation.
- Keep an Eye on Their Diet 🍴
Your dog may need a little extra food to fuel their body in colder weather, especially if they’re spending time outside. Natural cat treats are also growing in popularity, however, avoid overfeeding as they’ll be less active indoors. Fresh water is crucial too, so ensure their bowl doesn’t freeze if kept outside.
- Be Aware of Hidden Dangers ⚠️
Antifreeze is highly toxic to pets and has a sweet taste that can attract them. Keep antifreeze and other chemicals out of reach and clean up any spills immediately. Also, check your car before starting it – cats and small animals may seek warmth by curling up near the engine.
- Monitor Their Health 🩺
Cold weather can exacerbate certain health conditions, such as arthritis. Watch for signs of discomfort, and if your pet shows any unusual symptoms, consult your vet. Senior pets and those with underlying health issues may need extra care during the winter months.
Final Thoughts
Winter can be a beautiful season, but it’s important to stay vigilant about your pet’s safety. With a little preparation and care, your pets can enjoy the chilly weather as much as you do – perhaps even more!
Stay safe and enjoy the snow! ❄️🐾
